Flat borders;
Blanching with simple pressure

ClinicalTests

Observation;
If fever: ↑WBC, ↑ESR, ↑CRP, blood culture;
Most accurate test: inject saline into skin, aspirate for culture
R/O: DVT -> Pulmonary Embolism - D-dimer;

RiskFactors

Legs more often than arms;
Chronic skin problems;
Diabetes;
Chronic swelling;
IV drug users;
AIDS;
Surgery, trauma;
Cellulitis in the past;

Consequence

Heart failure, Cardiac arrest, Stroke;

ProgressionFromCondition

Extents from dermis into subcutaneous tissue tissue infections:
Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes, β-hemolytic Streptococcus

TreatmentOptions

Can’t be treated topically;

PharmOptions

Treatment is same for all skin infections except impetigo!
Mild on the skin -Oral:  cephalexin
with penicillin allergy: clarithromycin, clindamycin
For MRSA: doxycycline, clindamycin, TMP/SMZ

Severe (fever) IV:
With penicillin allergy: clindamycin
For MRSA: ceftaroline
